Here’s a scene we see every month: a customer puts two impact wrenches side by side. One claims 1,000 ft-lbs on the box. The other claims 700. He buys the 1,000 ft-lb gun, takes it home — and the “weaker” 700 ft-lb wrench he passed on would have out-worked it on every rusted bolt in his shop.
He didn’t read the spec sheet wrong. The spec sheet was written to be read wrong.
We distribute impact tools to professional shops for a living, and torque ratings are the single most misunderstood number we deal with. This guide explains what the numbers actually mean, why they’re inflated in practice, and how to compare wrenches like someone who sells them — not someone who markets them.
The three torque numbers brands publish
Most spec sheets use some mix of these terms, and they are not interchangeable:

The key insight: nut-busting torque is always the biggest number, so it’s the one that goes on the box. It describes a laboratory event, not a capability you can count on at your workbench.
Why the number on the box isn’t the number at your anvil
1. There’s no referee
There is no universally enforced, independent test standard that every brand follows to publish torque claims. Manufacturers largely test their own tools, their own way, and publish their own results. Two brands’ “1,000 ft-lbs” can come from two completely different test procedures — which is why comparing torque claims across brands is close to meaningless.
2. Peak torque takes time you won’t give it
Rated torque is typically reached only after the wrench hammers on a fastener continuously for several seconds. In real work, nobody holds the trigger down on one nut for five-plus seconds — and on fastening work you shouldn’t, unless you enjoy snapping studs.
3. Air wrenches are rated at pressure your hose probably isn’t delivering
Pneumatic impact wrenches are typically rated at 90 PSI measured at the tool inlet. Here’s what actually happens in most garages:
- The compressor gauge reads 90–120 PSI at the tank.
- Then the air fights through 25–50 feet of hose — often skinny 1/4” or 3/8” hose.
- Then through cheap quick-connect fittings that choke airflow at every joint.
- Under load, pressure at the tool inlet can sag far below 90 PSI — and with it, your torque.
A hard-hitting 1/2” gun that’s starved for air will lose to a modest gun that’s fed properly. The wrench takes the blame; the hose is usually the criminal.
4. Cordless numbers assume a perfect battery
Battery wrenches have their own asterisks. Published figures are produced with a full, healthy, usually high-output battery pack. Torque falls as the pack drains, small “compact” packs often can’t feed peak power at all, and cold weather quietly robs output further. The gun that breaks 1,000 ft-lbs in a launch video is doing it on a fresh flagship battery — not the half-drained compact pack that came in your kit.
5. “Up to” is doing heavy lifting
Marketing torque figures are ceilings, not promises. “Up to 1,400 ft-lbs of nut-busting torque” commits the manufacturer to exactly nothing about your bolt, your air supply, or your battery.
So how much torque do you actually need?
The honest answer for most jobs is: less than the marketing implies, but more than the spec suggests — because rust doesn’t read spec sheets. A fastener that was tightened to 100 ft-lbs can take several times that to break loose after a few winters of corrosion.

Note what this table implies: for ordinary automotive work, a good mid-class 1/2” wrench with real-world breakaway in the 500 ft-lb range covers almost everything. The 1,400 ft-lb monster is genuinely useful for heavy equipment — and overkill that snaps studs everywhere else.
How to compare impact wrenches like a distributor
- Compare within a brand, not across brands. Same brand, same test method — the numbers at least rank the models honestly against each other.
- Find the breakaway number, not the headline number. And check whether the headline figure was measured in reverse.
- Weight independent tests over spec sheets. Reviewers who put wrenches on a calibrated torque rig produce the only cross-brand numbers worth trusting.
- Buy by drive size and class for the job. Drive size (3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”) is a far more honest signal of a wrench’s intended workload than any marketing torque figure.
- Fix your air supply before blaming the gun. If you’re on pneumatics: 3/8” hose minimum (1/2” for big guns), high-flow fittings, and check pressure at the tool, not the tank.
The bottom line
Torque ratings aren’t fake, but they’re lab bests dressed up as everyday performance — measured with perfect air, perfect batteries, and patience no real mechanic has. Use them to rank models within a brand, lean on independent testing for cross-brand truth, size the tool by drive and job class, and remember that the quickest torque upgrade for an air gun is usually a fatter hose, not a new wrench.
